Welcome to the ISAE Congress 2012.
The Institute of Animal Husbandry and Animal Welfare of the Vetmeduni Vienna and the Division of Livestock Sciences of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) are pleased to invite you to the 46th Congress of the International Society for Applied Ethology (ISAE) which will be held at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, Austria, between July 31 and August 4, 2012. Sustainable animal production with animal welfare as an important aspect has a long tradition in Austria. Even more this accounts for ethological research - with Austria being the home of Konrad Lorenz. Therefore we are especially happy to host the ISAE congress here in Vienna. The congress is open for all researchers, teachers, students, policy-makers and others interested in applied ethology and animal welfare of farm, companion, laboratory, zoo and wilfdlife animals.
Consumers often expect animals from welfare friendly production to be free range during summer while in reality many farm animals often live indoors lifelong. This accounts as well for many companion animals and while zoo animals have outdoor enclosures they still differ largely from the wild. Can these indoor housings and enclosures be designed and managed in a way to enable good animal welfare, a high quality of life, without mutilations? What is the role of outdoor access or of affiliative relationships for positive emotions and welfare? How is the interplay with the animals geno- and phenotype? We hope for many contributions and discussion on these and other topics.
A pocket programme is included in your conference documents - no need to print!
